The VESU Orthopedic Lumbar Cushion strapped at belt height on an office chair

You Cannot Fix This By Remembering

Your lower back has a curve in it, and that curve is load-bearing. It is the reason you can stand all day without thinking about it.

Every office chair flattens it. The backrest is a straight surface and your lumbar spine is not straight, so there is a gap. Your body closes that gap the only way it can: the pelvis rolls backward and the curve collapses. Then your shoulders creep forward to keep your eyes level, and you are in the posture you keep catching yourself in and correcting for about ninety seconds.

Nobody can hold a position for eight hours. The chair has to stop pushing you out of it.

So we filled the gap. Thin at the top so it does not shove your shoulders forward, thick at the base where the curve actually needs holding.

What the research actually found

39%

Develop real pain from sitting

In a controlled sitting study, 39% of healthy adults became “pain developers” inside a single prolonged session. It is not in your head and it is not weakness.

47%

Less lower-back pain

When the trunk and pelvis were given extra contact support instead of being left unsupported, pain developers reported 47% less low back pain.

Live with a back problem — roughly one in six of us. If it feels like everyone at your office has a bad back, they do.

#1

Cause of disability

Low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Not a niche complaint, and not something that resolves on its own.

  • You keep catching yourself slumped

You straighten up, and ninety seconds later you are back. That is not discipline failing, that is a chair with a gap in it.

  • Your shoulders are creeping forward

When the pelvis rolls back, the upper body has to lean forward to keep your eyes level. The neck ache is downstream of the lower back.

  • There's a rolled-up towel behind you

It works. For about an hour, until it unrolls and slides down behind the seat.

  • Your chair has a bump and it is in the wrong place

Built-in lumbar sits where the factory put it, which suits people of one particular build. If you keep raising the seat to chase it, that is your answer.

  • The car is worse than the desk

A car seat rolls your pelvis back harder than an office chair does, and you cannot stand up halfway through the trip.

How it works

1

Strap it to the backrest

Loop the strap around, tighten. It stops the support sliding down to the seat by mid-morning.

2

Set it at belt height

Small of the back, not between the shoulder blades. Too high is the mistake almost everyone makes on day one.

3

Sit back into it

The gap is filled, so there is finally something behind you. You stop holding the posture and the chair holds it.

Belt height, not shoulder height

Stop holding the posture yourself

Nobody can hold a position for eight hours. The chair has to stop pushing you out of it.

  • When the commute undoes the day

The strap loops around a headrest post in about ten seconds. Car seats roll the pelvis back harder than office chairs, and half an hour each way stacks straight on top of eight hours at a desk.

  • When your chair has a bump in the wrong place

Built-in lumbar support sits at whatever height the factory chose. If you have been adjusting your seat up and down trying to meet it, this puts the support where your back is instead of the other way round.

  • When the couch is where the evening happens

Soft lounges have no lower-back support at all — you sink and the curve collapses completely. The same piece works there, and the evening is often longer than the workday.

  • When you are flying, or sitting through something long

An economy seat, a conference chair, a hospital visit. It packs flat enough to take with you, and the strap means it holds position on a seat you have never sat in before.

The Towel And The Built-In Bump

The rolled-up towel works for about an hour before it unrolls. The lumbar bump built into your chair sits at whatever height the factory chose, which is rarely yours.

  • Day 1

It will probably feel like it is shoving you forward. That means it is too high. Drop it to belt line and the feeling goes. Almost every complaint we get is this, and it is a thirty-second fix.

  • Week 1

You stop consciously correcting your posture, because there is nowhere to slump to. That is the change, and it is easy to miss because it feels like nothing happening.

  • Week 4 onward

The honest test. If your lower back is no easier at the end of the day by day thirty, send it back rather than persevere with it.

1 of 3

Not day one. Month one, because that is when you can tell the difference between a novelty and a change.

Collapsible content

Will the strap fit my chair?

It goes around the backrest and adjusts, so office chairs, dining chairs and most car seats are fine. The awkward case is a deep bucket seat with nothing to loop around.

Where exactly should it sit?

At the small of your back, roughly level with your belt line. Too high and it pushes your shoulders forward, which is the mistake most people make on day one. If it feels like it is shoving you, slide it down.

My chair already has lumbar support.

Most built-in bumps sit at a fixed height chosen by the factory, and a fixed height only suits people of one particular build. If yours already sits right for you, you may not need this. If you have been adjusting your seat height to chase it, that is your answer.

Do I need the seat cushion as well?

This one addresses the cause. The seat cushion addresses the part you actually feel, which is pressure on the tailbone. Most people end up with both, and the Orthopedic Seat + Lumbar Cushion Set has them for A$129.99 rather than A$169.98.

Can I use it in the car?

Yes. The strap loops around the headrest posts. A lot of people buy it for the commute rather than the desk.

Can I wash the cover?

The cover unzips and goes in the machine on cold. Air dry it. The foam is spot-clean only.

Is this a medical device?

No. It is a support cushion for comfort while sitting. It does not treat, diagnose or cure any condition, and results vary from person to person. If your pain is severe, radiating down a leg, or new and unexplained, see a physio or your GP rather than buying a cushion.

Who this isn't for

If your pain is severe, radiating down a leg, or new and unexplained, see a physio or your GP first.

If your chair is a deep bucket seat with nothing to loop a strap around, it has nowhere to anchor.

If the pain is the bone you are sitting on rather than the curve of your lower back, the seat cushion is the piece you want, not this one.
