The VESU Orthopedic Seat Cushion on an office chair in a home office

It Is A Bone, Not A Foot

Your tailbone is the end of your spine. It has almost no padding over it, and it was never built to carry your body weight. Sit on a flat chair and that is exactly what you ask it to do, for eight hours.

So you shift. You lean on one hip, then the other, then you slide forward until your lower back takes over. By three o'clock you are not sitting, you are managing.

We took the material out from underneath. The cut-out at the rear means there is nothing there to press against, and your weight is carried on the sit bones either side instead, which is where your skeleton is actually built to take it.

The first ten minutes feel strange, because you are used to pressure that has suddenly gone.

What the research actually found

39%

Develop real pain from sitting

In a controlled sitting study, 39% of healthy adults became “pain developers” inside a single prolonged session. It is not in your head and it is not weakness.

47%

Less lower-back pain

When the trunk and pelvis were given extra contact support instead of being left unsupported, pain developers reported 47% less low back pain.

Live with a back problem — roughly one in six of us. If it feels like everyone at your office has a bad back, they do.

#1

Cause of disability

Low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Not a niche complaint, and not something that resolves on its own.

  • It hurts more when you sit down than when you walk

Tailbone pain is load pain. Standing gives you relief. That is the giveaway that it is pressure, not muscle.

  • You perch on the front edge of the chair

Half sitting, half hovering, so the bone clears the seat. It works, and it wrecks your lower back within an hour.

  • Hard chairs are the worst part of the day

Dining chairs, waiting rooms, plastic stadium seats. The thinner the padding the faster it starts.

  • You dread the drive

A car seat presses in the same place with no chance to stand up. Anything over half an hour and you arrive stiff.

  • It started after something

A fall, surgery, childbirth, or a long recovery in a chair. Tailbone pain often has a date attached to it.

How it works

1

Cut-out to the rear

The U-shape sits under your tailbone. Nothing touches the bone.

2

Weight on the sit bones

The contoured sides take the load on the two bones your skeleton actually built for it.

3

Non-slip base

It stays where you put it instead of creeping forward every time you move.

Office chair, ute, dining chair, flight. It goes where you sit.

  • When the drive is the worst part

It lifts straight into the car. A bucket seat presses in exactly the same place as an office chair and you cannot stand up halfway. Anyone commuting more than half an hour usually notices the difference on the first trip.

  • When sitting still is not optional

Flights, all-day meetings, a hospital waiting room, the cricket. The cut-out matters most precisely when you cannot get up and walk it off.

  • When you are recovering

After surgery, after childbirth, or through a flare of haemorrhoids, direct pressure on the tailbone is the thing you are trying to avoid. Taking the material away from underneath is the simplest way to avoid it.

  • When the kitchen table is the office

A hardwood dining chair has no padding and no shape. Ten seconds and it becomes a seat you can work from without counting the minutes.

We Bought The Cheap Ones First

The thin foam ones pancake by month two and then you are sitting on an extra layer of nothing. The inflatable rings take the pressure off and give you nowhere stable to sit.

  • The first ten minutes

Strange. Pressure you had stopped noticing is suddenly gone, and the absence registers before the relief does. Sit through it.

  • Days 2 to 7

You stop thinking about the cushion. The tell is not how the morning feels, it is whether standing up at five is still an event.

  • Week 4 onward

The honest test. Long-standing tailbone pain does not clear in a week, and if nothing has shifted by day thirty, send it back rather than persevere.

Not day one. Month one, because that is when you can tell a novelty from a change.

Collapsible content

Will it fit my chair?

It sits on any flat seat, so office chairs, dining chairs, car seats and lounges are all fine. At 36 x 40 cm it suits most adult seat widths. Deep bucket seats are the only awkward case.

How long before I notice anything?

The first ten minutes feel odd because pressure you were used to is suddenly gone. Most people stop noticing the cushion by day two and notice the difference at five o'clock instead. If your pain is long-standing, give it a few weeks rather than a few days.

Will it flatten out like the last one?

That comes down to foam density, which is the boring specification that decides everything. Cheap cushions use low-density foam that compresses permanently within weeks. This uses high-density foam that returns to shape.

Do I need the lumbar support as well?

Honestly, most people end up wanting both. This one takes the pressure off your tailbone, which is the part you feel. The lumbar support stops your pelvis rolling backward, which is the part that causes it. Bought together in the Orthopedic Seat + Lumbar Cushion Set they are A$129.99 rather than A$169.98.

Can I use it in the car?

Yes, and a lot of people buy it for that specifically. It sits on the base of the seat. Bucket seats with a deep dish are the one shape where it does not sit flat.

Can I wash the cover?

The cover unzips and goes in the machine on cold. Air dry it. The foam itself is spot-clean only.

Is this a medical device?

No. It is a support cushion for comfort while sitting. It does not treat, diagnose or cure any condition, and results vary from person to person. If your pain is severe, radiating down a leg, or new and unexplained, see a physio or your GP rather than buying a cushion.

Who this isn't for

If your pain is severe, radiating down a leg, or new and unexplained, see a physio or your GP first. A cushion is not a diagnosis.

If your seat is a deep bucket — a sports car, some utes — it will not sit flat, and we would rather tell you now.

If the ache is in your lower back rather than the bone itself, the lumbar support is the piece you want, not this one.
