The Mask You Gave Up On

Most people have tried one once and abandoned it, usually for the same reason. It was cotton. It gripped the skin every time they turned over. By morning it had left a crease down one cheek and pushed half their hair into a knot at the back.

Satin is the whole point. It slides instead of gripping, so turning over does not drag your face with it, and there is no friction on your hairline.

The strap sits low at the back of the head rather than across the crown, so it does not ride up in the night. And it is deliberately light, because a mask you can feel is a mask you take off at two in the morning.

What the trials actually found

2 of 2

Randomised trials

Both found that people wearing an eye mask fell asleep faster and woke fewer times when the room was not dark enough. Small studies, but they point the same way.

0

Things to manage

Nothing to swallow, nothing to charge, nothing that interacts with anything else you take. That is most of the appeal.

1

Thing you control at 5am

You cannot move the sunrise and you cannot renovate the windows tonight. You can take the light away.

30

Nights to decide

A mask either becomes part of your night or it ends up in a drawer. A month is long enough to know which.

Sources: Huang et al., Critical Care 2015, eye masks and earplugs in a simulated noisy, lit environment — fewer awakenings and shorter time to fall asleep (doi 10.1186/s13054-015-0842-8). Hu et al., Critical Care 2015 — improved depth of sleep and overall sleep quality (doi 10.1186/s13054-015-0855-3). Retrieved via PubMed. Being straight with you: in the first of those trials oral melatonin beat the mask on perceived sleep quality. We are not claiming this is the strongest thing you can do for your sleep — only that it is the one with nothing to manage. These are findings about eye masks in general, not claims about this product.

  • You wake up before you want to

The room gets light at five in summer and your body treats that as morning whether you agree or not.

  • There's a crease down your cheek

Cotton grips. Every time you turn, it pulls the skin and holds it there for hours. That line is not sleep, it is friction.

  • Your hair is knotted at the back

A rough strap across the crown works like sandpaper on a hairline all night. Satin is what stops it.

  • You sleep when the world doesn't

Night shift, a newborn, a flight. You are trying to sleep at a time your bedroom was not designed for.

  • You own a mask and never wear it

It rode up, it pressed on your eyes, or you could feel it. All three are fit problems, not mask problems.

  • When the sun comes up before you're done

Australian summer light arrives around five and blackout curtains are an expensive renovation. This is the ten-second version of the same fix, and it travels between bedrooms.

  • When your face pays for the night

Satin does not tug at the skin around your eyes when you turn over, so you wake without the crease that takes an hour to fade. It is the same reason people move to satin pillowcases.

  • When you're sleeping at the wrong time

Shift work, a newborn, jet lag. Your body clock takes its instructions from light, so the fastest way to convince it that 2pm is night time is to take the light away.

  • When you're sleeping somewhere that isn't yours

Planes, hotels, the spare room at someone's parents. It packs into a pocket and asks nothing of the room you are in.

Why The Last One Ended Up In A Drawer

Almost every mask fails in one of two ways. Cotton grips your skin and your hair. Moulded contour masks hold the light out but sit on your face like a piece of equipment.

  Cotton masks Moulded contour masks

Slides against skin instead of gripping

No crease line in the morning

No friction on your hairline

Light enough to forget you're wearing it

Strap sits low, so it doesn't ride up

Packs flat for flights and naps

A mask either becomes part of your night or it ends up in a drawer. Two weeks is enough to know which.

Collapsible content

Will it block out all the light?

It blocks the light that reaches your eyes and it is comfortable enough to keep on all night, which matters more than absolute darkness. It is not a blackout blind though. If your room is genuinely floodlit you will still notice a little at the edges.

Does it stay on if I move around?

The strap sits low at the back of the head rather than across the crown, which is what stops most masks riding up. Side sleepers do fine with it.

Will it press on my eyes?

No. It rests over them rather than pushing on them, which is the difference between something you can sleep in and something you take off at two in the morning. If you wear eyelash extensions, a contoured mask is the better shape for you.

Which colour should I pick?

Midnight Black if you want the darkest. Storm Grey is the same tone as the VESU Sleep Headband, so the two sit together if you own both. Champagne is the one people buy as a gift.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash in cold water and air dry. Do not put it in the dryer, and do not wring it out.

Who this isn't for

If you need total blackout — a night shift worker sleeping through a summer afternoon in a room with no curtains — a moulded contour mask blocks more light at the edges than this does.

If you wear eyelash extensions, a flat mask sits on them. A contoured one does not.

If what wakes you is noise rather than light, this will not help, and we would rather say so.
